You can't argue with the price. This is the version history page for MPlayerX, showing the last 20 software updates. There are too many minuses for me to recommend this app, but hopefully, it will continue to improve. The interface is straightforward, if a bit bland. The good thing about MPlayer is that, like VLC, it uses a fairly small amount of system resources compared to iTunes and Songbird, which are both pigs. To be fair, VLC doesn't either, but Songbird does with this little Addon: The mini player is still too big - it should be really mini, like Songbird.ĭoes not respond to media keys on Apple keyboards. VLC behaves correctly when new files are being added. It should continue playing current file and not skip to newly added. Player starts playing new files when files are dragged into the playlist. Shortcut For Show/Hide Playlist doesn't work. When mixed file types are added to Mplayer, it allows all of the songs to show up on the playlist, but will not play any m4a. VLC, Songbird, Cog, Play, ToolPlayer all play the same files with no issues. This is annoying if you're trying to drag items into the playlist from several different windows.Ĭan't play. Playlist window keeps hiding behind other apps. 3) MPlayer stalls when more files are being added to the playlist if a file is already playing. Remove the cursor from the menu and the song resumes. 2) Hovering your cursor over any menu item while a song is playing will cause the song to stall. avi file in fullscreen, pressed ESC key, MPlayer completely froze my computer. Watch in amazement while MPlayer removes the song, but decides to keep playing it anyway. If you start playing a song and decide you don't like it, click remove. There are no keyboard shortcuts to skip, go back, shuffle, repeat, or add folder. This is really a necessary feature if you have hundreds of organized music or video folders and don't want to open each folder, then manually drag the file(s) into MPlayer, just to make a playlist. If you drag a folder onto Mplayer, it will not automatically start playing the files inside. MPlayer is improving, but it still doesn't hold a candle to VLC yet. DVD subtitles (SPU streams, VOBsub and Closed Captions) are supported as well. European/ISO 8859-1,2 (Hungarian, English, Czech, etc), Cyrillic and Korean fonts are supported along with 12 subtitle formats (MicroDVD, SubRip, OGM, SubViewer, Sami, VPlayer, RT, SSA, AQTitle, JACOsub, PJS and our own: MPsub). MPlayer has an onscreen display (OSD) for status information, nice big antialiased shaded subtitles and visual feedback for keyboard controls. MPlayer supports displaying through some hardware MPEG decoder boards, such as the Siemens DVB, DXR2 and DXR3/Hollywood+. It works with X11, Xv, DGA, OpenGL, SVGAlib, fbdev, AAlib, DirectFB, but you can use GGI, SDL (and this way all their drivers), VESA (on every VESA compatible card, even without X11!) and some low level card-specific drivers (for Matrox, 3Dfx and ATI), too! Most of them support software or hardware scaling, so you can enjoy movies in fullscreen. You can watch VideoCD, SVCD, DVD, 3ivx, DivX 3/4/5 and even WMV movies.Īnother great feature of MPlayer is the wide range of supported output drivers. It plays most MPEG/VOB, AVI, Ogg/OGM, VIVO, ASF/WMA/WMV, QT/MOV/MP4, RealMedia, Matroska, NUT, NuppelVideo, FLI, YUV4MPEG, FILM, RoQ, PVA files, supported by many native, XAnim, and Win32 DLL codecs. MPlayer is a movie player which runs on many systems (see the documentation).
